LIFE ON POLICE FORCE HAS ITS BRIGHT MOMENTS by Muriel Flexman
the life of a policewoman can at times be a jolly one admitted Mrs. Alice Goyette as she gazed with pride at her bright new long-service pin, presented to her last night. She was the lone woman attending the annual dinner of the Ottawa Police Association held in the convention Hall, Landsdowne Park. "Although much of my work is heartbreaking and sordid, there have been many humorous moments," she said. "I sometimes think I could match Mark Twain with some of my experiences." "Mrs. Goyette is an invaluable member of the force, especially in her communications with women," said Police Chief Reg Axcell, in taling about this policewoman who joined the force some 27 years ago (1936). She does not wear a uniform, neither does she take an active part in target practice, how a part of the training for women on the force. "I'm not a very good shot," she said. "Since I am the oldest member on the present force there are plenty of younger ones with a sharper aim." Mrs. Goyette has two sons, Paul and Emile and nine grandchildren which she call the "riches in my life." This motherly grey-haired policewoman spends most of her working day in the courts. She finds her ability to speak equally well in French and English a great help in dealing with people in trouble. And the people needing help are always sure of an understanding hearing from this policewoman who looks back through her records of tears, tantrums and sometimes terror but remembers mainly the amusing times she has had along the way.
