Mercier sod house
Scan from newspaper clipping. Robert and Mathilde were among the late arrivals, and homesteaded on the "SW 1/4 of Section 7 in Harmony Township in Webster County", consisting of the normal 160 acres. The west side of their property abutted the eastern boundary of Franklin County. Like other later settlers, their first home was built of sod, since the area was prairie, with few trees. Another French-Canadian family, the Demers (Francis Xavier), later changed to DeMars, settled southeast of Campbell. Aldie and Cora’s youngest child, Melvina, was born in that sod house in May of 1880
